The original Gallant House, built in 1880 and now 146 years old, carries the legacy of Joseph Gallant—community leader and second President of the Farmers’ Bank of Rustico, the first community-based bank in Canada. His spirit of resilience and independence still defines this historic property.
In May 1982, Gary and Judy arrived in Rustico with a vision to restore this remarkable home. After two years of careful preservation, The Barachois Inn opened in July 1984—now proudly welcoming guests from all over the world for over 42 years.
The story of Barachois Inn begins in the 1880s with a remarkable man named Joseph Gallant (1839–1923)—known locally as “Dandy Joe.”
A successful businessman and proud Acadian, Joseph was a visionary in Rustico, Prince Edward Island. As the second President of the Farmers’ Bank of Rustico—the first community-based bank in Canada—he played a key role in strengthening the village’s economy and shaping its future.
In the 1880s, he built the grand Victorian Gallant House, originally designed as both a store and residence. Crafted with fine woodwork and timeless architectural detail, the home reflected his ambition and progressive spirit. Today, at 146 years old, it remains the heart of the Barachois Inn—a beautifully preserved example of historic PEI architecture.
Joseph earned the nickname “Dandy Joe” for his impeccable style and polished appearance. Well-dressed and forward-thinking, he became a symbol of pride and leadership within the Acadian community.
